The organization I.L.E.R.A. was founded during the Universala Kongreso (worldwide Esperanto Congress) in 1970, by 14 Hams. The translated history is available for your information. There are over 350 ILERA members around the world. Many of these stations normally take part in scheduled nets and regularly operate on set frequencies, +/- QRM.

The ILERA members attending the World Congress normally try to operate a Special Events commemorative station during the week-long meeting. You can find more information about the commemorative stations on the history page.

The group has had more than 550 members during the 16-year history. There are more than 350 active members, as of the 1996 U.K. which met in Prague, Czech Republic.

There is one general meeting held annually at the Universala Kongreso. The 84th world congress took place in Berlin, Germany, in August of 1999. The 85th world congress will take place in Tel Aviv, Israel, at the end of July in 2000
