Those who know a little about the early history of the Esperanto movement will realize that Esperantists have always searched for practical ways to use the language and the international network of Esperantists for bettering the world. One of the present day methods of trying to bring hope to increasingly hopeless situations in today's world is through the Hope Account (Konto Espero) at the UEA. Established only in 1992, it already has surpassed $20,000 in donations recieved from members and groups worldwide. The money is used to help Esperantists throughout the globe who are in war torn countries, such as the lands of the former Yugoslavia and Burundi, through food packages and other items. (Unfortunately, UEA wasn't successful at reaching its contacts in Rwanda and improving the situation there.) Renato Corsetti, the initiator of the Account, contrasts in a December 1994 article in Esperanto ethnic differences are separating peoples in the ex-Yugoslavia and causing pain and suffering while the multi-ethnic workers of the Hope Account are collaborating in order to combat the situation. He also cites the popularity of the Account, which has seen donations from not only the "rich and famous" of the Esperantists movements, but also groups who are from econmically unstable countries themselves and even university students, who are internationally renown for being on tight budgets. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the need for the Hope Account will diminish soon, so contributions, regardless of the amout, are still needed. Anyone who would like to aid the Hope Account in its work may send a donation through either USEJ or ELNA, mentioning "Por la Konto Espero".
